• Activities and Societies: Mentoring 4th Year Undergraduate Students from Biological Sciences as Part of the Tri-Mentoring Program Career Services at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (11/2008 – 11/2010). Teaching Assistant for Microbiological Techniques at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada (09/2006 – 12/2006).During MY Ph.D. Research, i Worked in the Laboratory of Dr. B. Brett Finlay. MY Work Initially Focused on Characterizing Salmonella Infection of the Gallbladder in an Acute, Murine Model of Typhoid Fever. Salmonella Displayed A Striking Tropism for Gallbladder Epithelial Cells, Which Led to the Development of A Novel in Vivo Epithelial Cell Infection Model. Intracellular Bacteria Localize Subnuclearly, Displacing the Nucleus to the Apex of the Cells, and are Contained Within Salmonella Containing Vacuoles (Scvs) Where They Actively Replicate. This Work Confirmed Many Basic Aspects of Salmonella Infection of Epithelial Cells That have Been Shown in Vitro. i Also Used This Novel in Vivo Model to Expand This Knowledge, Examining Various Single Effector Mutants to Ascertain Their Potential Contributions to Salmonella’S Biology During Host Cell Interaction. This Work Resulted in 9 Peer-Reviewed Publications.
• Activities and Societies: Mb&Amp;B Club (President 2004-2005); University Wind Ensemble (2001-2004).Thesis Research (2004-2005): i Carried Out MY Independent Thesis Research as an Abbott Fellows Researcher in the Laboratory of Dr. Carmel Ruffolo, Participating in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (Reu) Program (Funded by the National Science Foundation). MY Studies Involved the Characterization of the Membrane Protein, Pnhb, and the Nudix Hydrolase, Pnha, of the Bacterial Pathogen, Pasteurella Multocida. The Above Work Resulted in One Peer-Reviewed Publication. Independent Research (2003): as A Member of an International Team of Investigators, i Contributed to the Annotation and Curation of the Rhodobacter Sphaeroides Genome Sequence. Under the Supervision of Dr. Robert Barber, i was Responsible for Describing Gene Products Over the Genome, Utilizing A Variety of Bioinformatic Tools to Examine and Assess the Biological Sequence Data, and Communicating the Significance of Those Findings to A Community of Investigators.
