• Bell Labs Sent ME to Carnegie Mellon University (Cmu) for Their One Year on Campus (Oyoc) Program to Get A Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (Computer Engineering) Degree. During This Time i Lived as A Mild-Mannered Grad Student in Pittsburgh, but i was Also A Btl Employee Paid A Salary. This Nearly Unique Program, Along with the Mystique of the Bell Labs Name, Meant That Most Offers from Btl were Accepted. not Only did They Pay You to Get Your MS Degree, You Weren'T Even Obligated to GO Back to Btl When You Got It! Most Did, Though, Because Btl was Such A Place to Work. at Cmu There were Only Six of US in the Oyoc Program. Most Students Seemed to Opt for Schools in More Moderate Climates; Stanford had Dozens of Oyoc Students.
• Activities and Societies: Triangle Fraternity, Amateur Radio Clubi Went Through the Standard 4-Year Engineering Sequence. Two Years of Basic Studies: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, &Quot;Liberal Electives&Quot; and Phys Ed. i Dreaded Phys ED Until i Found That Riflery was Phys ED and You could Take it More Than Once! Actually, Swimming and Especially Scuba were Fun. i Wish i Kept MY Certification Current. Junior and Senior Years were in the Engineering Specialty of Your Choice, Ee, of Course. SO i Spent A Lot of Time in Phillips Hall as Well as the Computer Terminals. (Back in MY Day, Only A Privileged Few Used Interactive Computer Terminals. the Peons Used Punch Cards and Printouts. and Every Day WE had to Carry Them Through the Snow. UP Hill. Both Ways.) Since i was Interested in Both Hardware and Software, i Discovered A Good Way to Boost Your Grades. Get Independent Study Whenever Possible and do A Hybrid Project. if It'S A EE Professor, Emphasize the Software. if It'S A CS Professor, Emphasize the Hardware. it Worked.
